Allopathy

The system of Medical Practice which treats and cures diseases by the use of drug remedies that produce different effects is termed as Allopathy. The term Allopathy was coined by C.F.S. Hahnemann in the year 1852 to distinguish this method of practicing medicine to that of homeopathy.

The concept of Allopathy is based on that diseases can be treated with the help of drugs. The term Allopathy is used in medical practice to differentiate one form of medical practice, medical tradition or medical profession from another. Hahnemann was the founder of homeopathy who wanted to differentiate this practice with that of other forms of medical treatments.

The practice of Allopathy is very much in contrast to that of homeopathy, and involves cures that produces a very opposite reaction in the patient's body. For example a person suffering from fever when administered a dose of allopathic medicine reduces the fever.

This term Allopathy is very loosely used and many people take offense of such exploitation of this term. In the 19th century Allopathy was in general used to refer to the irregular physicians. Today this term is much more widely used among Medical practitioners which indicates that there is a lack of awareness of this term's historical use and the recent relation between irregulars and allopaths.

Unlike present usage of the term Allopathy, Hahnemann reserved the term “allopathic” medicine to the practice of treating diseases by means of drugs that cause unrelated symptoms in the patient.
